Summit - Boston

The unincorporated community of Boston is located about 2.5 miles west of Boston Heights, 15 miles north of Akron and 23 miles south of Cleveland. It was one of several villages to be developed along the Ohio and Erie Canal in the early 1800s. Founded in 1806 by surveyor James Stanford, Boston is the oldest village in Summit County with the first settlement in the area having been established in 1820. Formerly known as Boston Mills, the community gets its name from Boston Township. The community prospered during the Canal Era and had its own lumber mill, warehouse, post office, and boatyards by the middle of the 19th century. The Valley Railway was built on the west side of the Cuyahoga River in the 1860s just as canal transport became outdated. It gave Boston residents the means to move produce and goods faster. A company store selling paper sacks and roofing paper was built beside the tracks and now houses the Boston Mill Visitor Center.
