Portage County

Portage County might be considered a hidden treasure among the five Northeast Ohio counties. Only 30 miles south of Cleveland, and just east of Akron, this county is the 15th most populous in Ohio, but you wouldn’t know it because Portage exudes a comfortable blend of country, city and college towns. Its residents enjoy the benefits of urbanization and easy connection to the greater Cleveland-Akron region, but also the charm of small-town living, a rolling, rural landscape dotted with farms and a range of living spaces.

The natural amenities include West Branch State Park and Reservoir (a 2,650-acre lake Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park (rugged cliffs and diverse plant life packed into a 67-acre park) and three State nature preserves are included in the County’s borders – Tinkers Creek, Eagle Creek and the Kent Bog. There are also numerous local parks and county parks. Cultural attractions include the Kent State University and Museum (eight galleries featuring important collections of fashion and decorative arts) and the county is near the Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market, Aurora Farms Premium Outlets, state and local parks, and area museums.

Portage is also home to a number of colleges, including Northeast Ohio Medical University, Hiram College and Kent State University. The Cuyahoga River flows right through the city of Kent, which boasts of a revitalized downtown area and a new assimilation with the university within its borders. The city of Ravenna launches a popular hot air balloon festival each year which draws visitors from around the world.
