Summit County

Summit County is both big city and big country: The fourth-most populous county in Ohio and home to the city of Akron, Summit is also the site for the bulk of the sprawling 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP), a destination site that routinely ranks among the top five visited national parks in America.

The beautiful and varied national park is augmented by another 14,000 acres maintained by Summit Metro Parks with 16 parks and more than 125 miles of trails, including two miles of the historic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. But there’s more: Destinations like the Akron Zoo, Hale Farm & Village or the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens broaden the natural and cultural feel of this county and this community.

The cultural vibe continues when you consider the modernist feel of the Akron Art Museum or Summit Artspace or catch a show at the Akron Civic Theatre, EJ Thomas Hall or others. And all that’s before you even consider the stunningly beautiful (visually and aurally) Blossom Music Center, the summer home of the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra, as well as the Akron Symphony Orchestra and others.

And you want sports? Summit has it all. Golf: The region is host to the annual Bridgestone Senior Players Golf Championship. Baseball: The Akron Rubber Ducks (named as a nod to the rubber industry that helped build the city) are an AA affiliate of the Cleveland baseball team (renamed the Guardians for the 2022 season) and play right in downtown at the cozy and classic Canal Park. College athletics: There’s also sports of all kinds to watch at the University of Akron Zips. Racing: There’s Barberton Speedway (cars) or Northfield Park (horses) or the All-American Soap Box Derby (kids). Finally, skiing: Some of the best snow skiing in Ohio can be found at the Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Resort.

Summit County and Akron are also home to fantastic shopping and dining. The shopping ranges from antiques in every corner of the county to the Summit Mall, anchored with top retailers. The food scene runs from the cool and kitschy to the contemporary and classic, including the nostalgia of being served car-side at the famous Swenson’s Drive-In or the sweetness of a visit to the Harry London Chocolate Factory.
