Geauga County

Come to Geauga County for the country living and lush, beautiful scenery. Stay for the culture, history and ease of access to cosmopolitan Cleveland only 30 miles to the west.

Named by Forbes Magazine as the “4th Best County in the Nation to Raise a Family,” Geauga still had a population below 95,000 in 2019 and remains a prime location to live, relax and work.

Some of that work takes place in the farmlands that still dot the beautiful landscape of this county, which has a perfect blend of suburban and rural living. An agrarian past runs deep in the still-tilled farmlands of Geauga, home to the state’s longest running agricultural fair: The Great Geauga County Fair hasn’t missed an annual celebration since its inception in 1823 and is still a popular family event every Labor Day weekend.

Not only are there a number of still-operating family farms in the county, especially in the less developed eastern half, there are more than three dozen apple orchards that produce a total of 90 million pounds of apples, or over 1,000 varieties. And then there’s the maple syrup: Geauga is No. 1 in Ohio for the production of maple-related products, including the naturally sweet syrup poured over pancakes every Sunday in March during “Pancake Town USA,” at a host of breakfast sites around the county.

Geauga, founded in 1806, boasts a strong history: Burton was the first permanent settlement in the county in 1798 and the town square there (the original county seat) and in Chardon (the current county seat) are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also home to the second-largest Amish population in the state and fourth largest in the world. A trip to Amish country and a stay at one of Geauga’s fine bed-and-breakfast inns is a delight for both the visitor and the resident of the county. And while you’re out and about, stop by some of Geauga’s great antique stores and quaint family restaurants to complete your day in the country.
