Known as an agricultural hub with a long history of producing grains, fruit, and vegetables, Copley is an unincorporated community in Summit County. Located west of  Akron and south of Fairlawn and Bath Township, the community was previously known as Greenfield and Copley Center for its location within the geographical center of the township. Copley was first settled in 1814 by Civil War soldier Jonah Turner and founded in 1819 by Gardiner Greene, who named the community after his wife, Elizabeth Copley Greene. A post office for Copley Center was established in 1835. The community’s name was changed to Copley Township in 1840 after breaking away from Medina County and joining Summit County. Copley Township encompasses 20.8 square miles with a population of more than 18,000. It is the largest of the county’s nine townships.
